Consistent Behavioral Syndrome Across Seasons in an Invasive Freshwater Fish

چکیده

Understanding the linkage between behavioral types and dispersal tendency has become a pressing issue in light of global change biological invasions. Here, we explore whether dispersing individuals exhibit that differ from those remaining source population. We investigated feral population guppies ( Poecilia reticulata ) undergoes yearly range shift cycle. Guppies are among most widespread invasive species world, but temperate regions these tropical fish can only survive winter-warm freshwaters. Established thermally-altered stream Germany, confined to warm-water influx winter, spread peripheral parts as thermally accessible. sampled winter-abandoned site March, June August. Fish were tested for boldness, sociability activity involving open-field tests including interactions with robotic social partner. differed consistently each other all three traits within sample. Average trait expression across seasons, however, could not detect differences downstream Instead, populations exhibited remarkably stable syndrome boldness despite strong seasonal changes water temperature associated environmental factors. conclude random drift (opposed personality-biased dispersal) is more likely mode guppies, at least stream. In face fluctuating environments, seem be extremely effective keeping expressions constant, which help explain their successful invasion adaptation new disturbed habitats.

Variable survival across low pH gradients in freshwater fish species.

A series of 14 day experiments was conducted on five common New Zealand fish species (redfin bully Gobiomorphus huttoni, inanga Galaxias maculatus, brown trout Salmo trutta, longfin eel Anguilla dieffenbachii and koaro Galaxias brevipinnis) to assess the effect of pH on survival and changes in body mass. No species survived in water of pH <4 although there was 100% survival of all adults at pH ...

Behavioral syndrome in a native and an invasive hymenoptera species.

Recent studies have focused on the role of behavior in biological invasions. Individuals may differ consistently in time for several behavioral traits (personality) which covary (behavioral syndrome) resulting in different behavioral types, some of them favoring invasion. Social hymenopterans have a strong potential to be invaders and their success depends primarily on the foundresses' ability ...

Fine-scale local adaptation in an invasive freshwater fish has evolved in contemporary time.

Adaptive evolutionary change in only a few generations can increase the ability of non-native invasive species to spread, and yet adaptive divergence is rarely assessed in recently established populations. In this study, we experimentally test for evidence of fine-scale local adaptation in juvenile survival and growth among three populations of an invasive freshwater fish with reciprocal transp...

An eDNA Assay to Monitor a Globally Invasive Fish Species from Flowing Freshwater

Ponto-Caspian gobies are a flock of five invasive fish species that have colonized freshwaters and brackish waters in Europe and North America. One of them, the round goby Neogobius melanostomus, figures among the 100 worst invaders in Europe. Current methods to detect the presence of Ponto-Caspian gobies involve catching or sighting the fish. These approaches are labor intense and not very sen...
